Bluetick Coonhound
Bluetick Coonhounds are speedy and compact nocturnal hunters named for the mottled (or “ticked”) black-and-blue pattern of the glossy coat. A small female might stand 21 inches at the shoulder and weigh 45 pounds; a large male can top out at 27 inches and 80 pounds. Blueticks are well-muscled but sleek and racy, never chunky or clumsy. The baying, bawling, and chopping bark of Bluetick Coonhounds in hot pursuit might sound cacophonous to some, but to coon hunters it’s the music of the night.
Grooming
The typical owner of this breed will use it as a hunting dog. Before going out to hunt and track, it is a good idea to bathe this dog in Aloe Oatbath Medicated Shampoo. This shampoo has no harsh detergents or fragrances, which will help mask the dog’s scent from the animal it is hunting, even if the hound is downwind. If your Coonhound is an indoor pet we recommend a great fragrance shampoo like Shampoo & Conditioner in One to keep it smelling great for days. This breed has an easy wash and wear type coat, so bath time is usually quick and simple.
Between Bath Coat Care: During the dry winter months, or in generally dry climates, use Aloe Hydrating Spray to hydrate and moisturize the skin and coat. For a quick bath in between regular “full baths”, use Perfect Calm Waterless Bath. Simply spray on and wipe with a towel. After a good run in the backyard or woods, these wipes are a must!
Ears
For monthly ear cleaning, use Espree Ear Care. If weekly care is needed for an existing chronic ear condition, use Espree Ear Care Aloe Wipes. This routine will help keep any ear problems at bay. Remember, never clean further than you can see inside the ear. With this dog’s naturally long ears, check regularly, even the ear leather, for sores and ticks. With their large ears, you will also need to smell to be sure no odor is coming from deep inside the ear. This will make for clean and healthy ears.
Eyes
Opti-Soothe Eye Wash can be used to help flush foreign matter, such as leftover shampoo, as well as help rinse common eye allergens while soothing any irritation. Since this breed is happiest running through wooded areas, check the eyes regularly for foreign debris.
Common Problems
Coat and Skin: Fleas and ticks are also a common issue for these athletic and active dogs. Our Flea and Tick Shampoo is fantastic and loved by groomers, while the Flea and Tick Spray keeps them away for up to twelve days. Before outdoor activities, especially hunting, use Flea & Tick Repellent Wipes for a quick repellent method.
Skin abrasions and bug bites can occur while your dog is running and exploring outside. Keep 3 in 1 Healing Cream on hand for when those accidents happen.
Health
A diet with essential fatty acids is a must. Pure Icelandic Salmon Oil has all of the omega fatty acids it will need, as well as keep dandruff at bay.
Paws
Rub Paw Balm on the pads of the feet to protect and condition the pads since this breed loves to dig. Paw Balm will keep its paws soft and help keep from cracking.
