Dachshund
The Dachshund, meaning "badger dog" in German, is a lively breed with a friendly personality and keen sense of smell. Known for their long and low bodies, they are eager hunters that excel in both above- and below-ground work. One of the most popular breeds according to AKC®, they come in three different coat varieties (Smooth, Wirehaired or Longhaired) and can be miniature or standard size.
Dachshunds were first bred in the early 1600s in Germany. The goal was to create a fearless, elongated dog that could dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with the vicious badgers.
The breed became popular in the U.S. during the early 1900’s, but fell out of favor during World War I. After the war, a few U.S. breeders slowly rebuilt the gene pool by importing German stock, and the breed began to increase in popularity again.
Breed Profile
Dachshunds are lovable, playful companions, and an ideal pet for many homes, including those with children with appropriate supervision. They require moderate exercise and can adapt to most living environments. Depending on their coat type, Dachshunds may need regular grooming.
Grooming
The Dachshund is a scent hound and so it is built low to the ground with many flaps and wrinkles and long ears. Many of the scent hounds have large heavy lips and tend to drool. Noses of scent hounds are Very sensitive and shampoos with too much fragrance and dips should be avoided unless absolutely needed. Dachshunds come in 2 sizes and 3 coat types, wire, smooth and long haired. They should be groomed every 4 – 6 weeks to clean ears, clip nails and check anal glands.
Paws
Dachshunds have very large thick nails and need regular nail trims to keep their feet from splaying. Because they track game they need Paw Balm to keep their pads soft and pliable to keep them from drying and cracking.
Eyes
Opti-Soothe Eye Wash is a must. Flush the eyes of any foreign matter and keep the eye moist.
Ears
Dachshunds have heavy ears and are prone to ear problems, use Ear Care to clean the ears and help dry out any moisture deep within the ear, this will help with the odor. Only clean as far as you can see.
Bathing
Scent hounds definitely require multiple baths. The first bath is for general cleaning to take off the dirt and grime. Any of the Classic Care or Professional Care products are ideal. Follow up with the second bath and target the need of the dog. Outdoor and field dogs may need Citrusil Plus Shampoo or Tea Tree & Aloe Shampoo for irritations from running through brush on the trail. Bassets with an oily coat may need Energee Plus Shampoo. Dachshunds are known for having body odor, for these dogs we suggest Oatmeal and Baking Soda Shampoo. Be sure to end the bath with conditioner or a deep moisturizing with Luxury Remoisturizer. This will keep the coat hydrated to protect against harsh weather conditions.
Coat Care
Use Aloe Hydrating Spray between grooming to help keep the coat hydrated between baths.
Show Dog Tips
High Sheen Finishing Spray can be used before entering the ring, it will add shine and luster to the coat without leaving an oily residue
Common Problems
Dirty ears are common problems and need to be addressed regularly. Use caution when picking up your dachshund in and out of the tub, they are prone to back problems.
